Dr. Iko Ibanga, 24Karats leader of the month of November 2014
Hi everyone, once every month I will be celebrating outstanding leaders that are making transformational impact in their world on this platform. The caption would be “My 24Karats leader of the month”. If you think you are a 24Karats leader that needs to let the world know the impact you are making, you can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Today I will be celebrating someone who has not just made great impact in the world, but someone who has made tremendous impact in my life. He is a mentor, leader, boss and father to me. I met him in October 2011, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Nigeria. Then I went as a volunteer for a free healthcare mission under the auspices of his organization. After talking with him, he picked interest in me (I believe he saw a leader he could build). Months later I started working for him as his Personal Assistant among other job responsibilities, which I did and still do. I know he doesn’t like this, but posterity will not forgive us if we refuse to celebrate great leaders who have made impact in our lives. Today happens to be his birthday so I will celebrate him as much as I can. His name is Dr. Iko Joseph Ibanga. Here are a few things you need to know about him.
Dr. Iko Ibanga was born on November 14, 1960 at Abak General Hospital to Late Elder (Dr.) Joseph Ibanga and Madam Akon Ibanga. The second child but first male in a family of five (two females three males), he hails from Uruk Uso in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He is married to his beautiful wife, Pastor Mrs. Esther Ibanga and they are blessed with two lovely daughters.

He started his primary education at Otoro I Primary School, Uruk Uso, Abak in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria in 1966. In 1969 he proceeded to the United States where he completed his Grade School and did part of his Junior High School. He later returned to Nigeria in 1975 to complete his High School at Holy Family College, Oku-Abak, Akwa Ibom State. He obtained a Division 1 Distinction in the West African Schools Certificate examinations in 1977. In 1978 he did his higher education at the Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State where he obtained the best result in the Higher School Certificate examinations in Sciences. His grades earned him a place in the University of Ibadan College of Medicine, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, where he obtained his MBBS degree in 1985. He later obtained a Masters degree in Human Anatomy from the University of Calabar College of Medical Sciences, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria in 1993. In March 2006, he attended the Executive Education Program on Strategy for Non-profit Organizations at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. He joined the Executive Education Program of Harvard Business School, Harvard University, Boston, on Strategic Perspectives in Non-profit Management, July 2006.
Dr. Ibanga has won many national and international awards in recognition of his excellent performances in education, leadership and service to humanity. One of which is the prestigious national award of member of the Order of the Niger (OON) bestowed on him under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR).
Dr. Ibanga is a visionary and exemplary 24Karats leader. He is a man full of deep commitment in serving his Fatherland and all humanity. He is a transformational leader a man of impact and a change driver. Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians and other African nationals whose lives have been transformed through his charitable endeavors bear testimony to this fact. Above all, he is a man with a deep fear and reverence for God.
You may ask what charitable endeavours has he been involved with that have won him so many accolades? Let me tell you. Dr. Ibanga has an inborn passion to help the poor and less privileged. To fulfill this passion, in 1991 he established Pro-Health International (PHI), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free medical care to the poor and less privileged people in the rural areas of Africa with the love of Christ. PHI was birthed from a passage in the book of Genesis chapter 12 verse 2 that says, “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you. And make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.” To know more about PHI you can visit www.prohealthimapact.com or www.prohealthinternational.org.
For the past 23 years, through PHI Dr. Ibanga has provided free healthcare and health promotion activities to over 2.5million people in rural and semi-urban areas of Africa, especially Nigeria. PHI has spread their impact to over 25 African countries. But these past years have not been without challenges. Taking the risk of traveling to several states within and outside Nigeria via road, air and water has not been an easy experience, but God has been faithful. In all of these God has blessed PHI so much that words alone cannot express. PHI today is unarguably the best indigenous NGO that provides free health care in Nigeria.

One of the things that are outstanding about Dr. Ibanga is that he has raised leaders that are doing great things all over the world, this includes me. You can’t come near him and not catch a vision. He has inspired a whole lot of us to believe that greatness is possible. And that one sure way of achieving greatness is through service garnished in love. Working and serving under his leadership has taught me humility, love, servant-hood, service, resilience and determination. He is that type of leader that will allow you live your potentials and express your gifts while working with him. He is greatness personified. He is a 24Karats Leader.
Talking about leadership, Dr Iko and his wife decided to start up a life changing organization in May 2012 called Future Leaders Inc. Having two teenage daughters, they could relate with the many questions going on in the minds of young people and the need for the right answers to be provided for them. So they felt such answers should extend not just to their daughters but to a larger percentage of youths they can reach. Their decision is what has given birth to four teenage conference camps in three years now. The testimonies resulting from the one-week camps have been overwhelming.
Future Leaders Inc. has increased in impact both in Jos and its surrounding states. Her mission, which is, “to raise an army of youths that will emerge as instruments of transformation. A generation of people equipped to stand out as great leaders, models and world changers” is expressed daily through the lives of the impacted youths. In future Leaders Inc. it is believed that “the future starts today.”
