“So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.” (John 5:18, NLT).
Isn’t it unfortunate how the world has been battered all in the name of Religion? Brutal killings and massacres carried out on innocent lives because of a certain belief. ISIS, Boko Haram, Alshabab, just to mention a few, all stem from a religious belief. How in the world will someone kill a fellow human because they are of a different faith?
This whole killings did not start today. Our text scripture today says it. Even the Jewish religious leaders sought to kill Jesus because what he believed was different from what they knew. He was literally going against their traditions and system of worship and they sought to kill him for it.
Isn’t it ironic how they tried to keep the laws of Moses but turned out to be hypocrites while at it. They sought to stone to death an adulterous woman, but were not free from sin themselves. Hidden in the core of religion is hypocrisy and sinful acts. Religion rests on the walls of laws and tradition. But true Christianity rests on the walls of grace and a personal relationship with God.
Religion will justify doing something wrong (e.g killing) for its faith. No wonder the Jews preferred a thief Barnabas against Jesus (a holy man). That’s the danger of religion. True Christianity is the expression of love for God and man. When you walk in it, hurting someone else will be far from your heart. Walk in love today. We’ll dig deeper into this by my next post. Lovely week ahead my friend. #BeInspired.
