“Jesus answered him, “The Scriptures say, ‘It is not just bread that keeps people alive. Their lives depend on what God says.’” (Matthew 4:4, ERV).
Jesus, after a forty day and forty night fast, was very hungry and needed to eat. The devil came tempting, asking Him to turn stone to bread so he could eat. Then Jesus made the above comment used as our text.
The first thing I want us to learn here is that the devil will always tempt you through the portal of your personal desires/lusts/weaknesses. He knows that at this point your flesh longs so much for those desires; for Jesus, His body needed food badly. Secondly, every temptation would question your identity (who you are) in Christ; in Jesus’ case the devil said, “If you are the Son of God, turn this stone to bread”.
Succumbing to temptation automatically moves you out of the real you, who is already a victor, to a victim. But the scripture above tells us a deep truth. The existence of man does not just depend on the food he eats. There is something more that is the actual substance. It is the steady stream of God’s word to you. It is the rhema of God’s word per time that makes the difference in your life.
Many of us have become so busy with career, work, business and chasing money that we relegate God’s word to the background. We chase after the food more than the word. We study books and research to get the next big idea of how to make money. But we do not search the word of God with such vigour. We rush our prayers so we can dash out, not waiting for God to speak back to us. We have misplaced our priorities. Your life is dependent on God’s word. Without the steady stream of God’s word, you are like a walking corpse. I wish you would understand this. Have a great week ahead my friend. #BeInspired.
